Mountain biking: the under-rated and drug-free antidepressant

A bad day on a mountain bike always beats a good day in the office.

I don't have a bucket list  but my "bikeit" list  is a mile long.

Duration: 2-3 Hours

A 20km circular route around the village between the orchards, wine farms and mountains. A non-wine farm activity for those who would like a bit of riding exercise in our beautiful country-side. A pit stop for coffee at our local roastery can be arranged (Please choose this option when booking).

It is relatively non-strenuous ride, apart from a small incline on a tar road.  There is a section of dirt road that can be a bit corrugated but still doable.

We meet at the Franschhoek Adventure Centre in the main road of the village and get fitted for our bikes.

After a short safety briefing and discussion of the farms to be visited, we head off to our first farm. You are reminded that we ride on the left side of the road until we reach the bicycle track or a gravel shoulder.

We ride along the back streets of the village and through a vineyard with our gorgeous moutains welcoming you.  We visit 3 wine farms with a short ride between each farm. At each venue you will be offered a variety of wines to choose from and the sommelier will be on hand to provide interesting information on the wines chosen.

Your guide will give you as brief history of the area and how the wine industry was started and will give you some interesting information about South African wines, culture and social life.  A very friendly, casual tour which you are sure to enjoy.

After our 3rd farm we have a quick 10 minutes ride back into town.

We meet at the Franschhoek Adventure Centre and get fitted for our bikes and safety helmets.

The first part of the route takes place on the back roads of the village and through a vineyard.   You are reminded that we ride on the left side of the road until we reach the bicycle track or a gravel shoulder.

The tour enters the wine and fruit farm areas behind the town. A short uphill section awaits us with a lovely steep downhill to freewheel as our reward.   We then enter the Berg River Conservation area and cycle to the dam and back to the gate, before turning on to a gravel road which takes us through a Fynbos rich area.

We stop at any interesting flowers we see for a closer look. Be on the look out for raptors on this section. Jackal Buzzard, Verreaux’s Eagle and Fish Eagles are often seen.

We cross the main road before heading back towards Franschhoek for a section on the bike path. We turn into one of the oldest wine farms in our area just before entering the village. The road through the vineyards is beautiful and scenic and takes us through to one of the newest farms in the area. After cycling between the vines we enter the village once again and head home.

As an optional extra: Should the mood take you, we stop off at our local Coffee Roastery for a cup of freshly brewed java and a sweet snack. Just the thing to keep you going on our last leg home.
