BIRD WATCHING

Southern Africa is blessed with an enormous amount of wild birds, 950 or so species. It is fast becoming a birders paradise, with the hobby of bird-watching taking off strongly in many countries, and birders traveling to far flung places to add to their life lists.

While Franschhoek may not be known as a birding mecca, we have more than enough of our edemic and other birds to keep us happy.

HALF DAY FRANSCHHOEK

Our local bird-watching trip is around Franschhoek, Paarl and Stellenbosch to the best birding spots. Highlights include the local endemics like Orange-breasted Sunbird, Cape Sugarbird, Cape Siskin etc.

8 hrs, from R1 500/Adult

FULL DAY FRANSCHHOEK TO BETTYS BAY

A lovely day out from Franschhoek to Betty’s Bay and back stopping at many excellent birding spots on the way. Includes Harold Porter Botanical Garden and the Penguin Colony. Local endemics, raptors and water birds feature strongly.

WEST COAST OVERNIGHT

A superb trip up the West Coast from Franschhoek with an over night stop in Langebaan or Lamberts Bay. Includes a visit to Bird Island to witness the thousands of Cape Gannets that nest there.  The usual endemics as well as a plethora of waders with stunning landscapes on he coastal trip.

Departs Daily at 8am

From the Franschhoek Adventure Centre. Scheduled Pickups Available upon Request.

Details & Itinerary

While Franschhoek is not known as a birding mecca, we have our fair share of fabulous endemic birds in and around the village.  

Out full day trip takes us out of town to the south coast with plenty of awesome birding spots on the way.

The 2 day tour is a special treat up the West Coast visitng a large number of great birding venues with the high-light being the Bird Island Gannet colony.

For first time South African experiences, these trips will add significantly to your life lists!  

What You Should Bring

Bring:

  • Binoculars (spotting scope not essential)
  • Bird Book however, we do have a digital Roberts Bird Book available and online Listing system (BirdLasser)
  • Coffee and snacks if required

Wear:

  • Comfortable clothing of neutral colour
  • Walking shoes
  • Sunhat
  • Sunscreen

Fitness Level

This is a mostly driven tour however we do walk around at the various birding spots.  Very easy leisurely walking.

Pick Up & Drop Off

We depart from and return to the Franschhoek Adventure Centre which is at Shop 5, upstairs @ 62 Huguenot Rd, Franschhoek (right next to the Tourism Office).
